The royal family has always been a subject of intrigue, and the latest news surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's potential absence from King Charles' birthday celebration has only added to the speculation. The relationship between King Charles and his younger son, Prince Harry, has been under the microscope for some time, and recent developments suggest that the ties might be more strained than ever.
In August, reports emerged that King Charles was hopeful of seeing his son, Prince Harry, along with Meghan Markle, and their children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, at his upcoming birthday celebration. However, Paul Burrell, a former royal butler, recently shared insights that paint a different picture. Burrell expressed that the royal family faces a dilemma: whether to invite the Sussexes and face potential fallout or exclude them and still risk public scrutiny. He emphasized that King Charles has been navigating this predicament for a while and it's likely to persist.
Although there has been no official statement from Buckingham Palace or the Sussexes regarding their attendance, Burrell is skeptical about the American-based royals making the trip to the U.K. for the event. He stated, "I don't think that Harry and Meghan would accept an invitation to a family gathering to celebrate the King's birthday." Burrell further elaborated on the vast rift between the Sussexes and the royal family, suggesting that both parties would feel extremely uneasy in each other's presence. He firmly believes that such a reunion is unlikely to happen.
Burrell also touched upon the limited opportunities for the Sussexes to reconcile with the royal family. He feels that the bridges have been burned beyond repair, and the only way Harry might return to the U.K. would be for his charitable events. Burrell doesn't foresee Harry participating in royal capacities, except for significant state occasions. He mentioned, "The King's death would be an occasion that Harry would have to attend. It's his father for goodness sake." However, he differentiates between state and private occasions, suggesting that the Sussexes might be welcome for the former but not the latter.
Interestingly, Burrell revealed that while Harry might not be in communication with his father or brother, he has maintained ties with his mother's side of the family, the Spencers. Harry has reportedly sought the Spencers as mediators in the past, given their understanding of the royal court without being a part of it. Burrell shared, "Harry feels he's an outsider and he's gravitated [toward] the Spencer side. His mother's blood."
The ongoing dynamics within the royal family continue to captivate audiences worldwide. As King Charles' birthday approaches, all eyes will be on the guest list, waiting to see if the Sussexes make a surprise appearance or choose to stay away, further solidifying the apparent rift.
