Another day, another drug scandal.
Today alone, three drug-related cases involving celebrities have sent shockwaves through the entertainment world, affecting both the music and film industries.
The Incheon Police Department announced investigations into eight individuals, including a male actor in his 40s known as "Mr. A," on charges related to drug control laws.
This actor was rumored to be "Famous Actor L," and some speculate he's known for his deep voice. A representative from L's agency told Star News, "We are currently verifying the allegations related to drug charges."
The investigation into Mr. A came about when police, while investigating drug activities centered around entertainment venues, received a tip that "celebrities are using drugs."
Those under investigation include Mr. A, aspiring celebrities, heads and employees of entertainment venues, who are suspected of consuming marijuana multiple times since January this year.
Earlier today (October 19, KST), actor Yoo Ah-in was indicted on charges of habitual drug use. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office charged Yoo Ah-in with using Propofol habitually, illegally obtaining sleeping pills under someone else's name, marijuana consumption and distribution, and tampering with evidence.
According to prosecutors, Yoo Ah-in consumed Propofol 181 times from September 2020 to March of the previous year and illegally obtained sleeping pills under another person's name 44 times from September 2021 to August of the past year.
Currently, Yoo Ah-in is facing charges related to the use of seven or more drugs, including Propofol, marijuana, ketamine, cocaine, zolpidem, midazolam, and alprazolam. However, it's reported that Yoo Ah-in has denied these allegations, except for the marijuana charge.
Furthermore, singer Nam Tae-hyun, formerly of the group WINNER, and broadcaster Seo Min-jae faced their first trial at the Seoul Western District Court for consuming Philopon. Prosecutors said, "The defendants bought 0.5g of Philopon in August 2022 and diluted it in alcohol. In December, Nam Tae-hyun diluted 0.2g of Philopon in water and consumed it." Both Nam Tae-hyun and Seo Min-jae admitted to the charges.
Nam Tae-hyun apologized, "I am sorry for causing social controversy. I am currently admitted to a drug rehabilitation center. I reflect on my actions daily." He further added, "Beyond personal reflection, I will take responsibility as a public figure in a society where drug issues are becoming severe. I aim to become someone who can influence positively without controversies or incidents." Upon leaving the courtroom, he again apologized to fans, saying, "I will try to live diligently."
Seo Min-jae commented, "I am recovering (from the drug issue). I hope others don't experience similar situations." He added, "I will accept the punishment and sincerely face the trial and remaining processes."
