In recent times, the entertainment industry has been abuzz with rumors about Whoopi Goldberg's potential retirement from her longstanding position as a co-host on the daytime talk show, "The View." However, the 67-year-old talk show host has finally addressed these speculations, providing clarity on her future with the show.
Speaking to The Sun during the Fashion Group International's annual Night of Stars gala, where she was the guest of honor, Goldberg humorously remarked, "I've done nothing but retire. I've been retired my whole career." She further added, "So, I kind of like that."
Goldberg's comments come amidst growing speculation about her departure, especially given her noticeable absence from the show on Fridays. Addressing this, she explained, "I have a contract. As long as I'm doing the contract, nobody's mad. But I've been off on Fridays for years now because when we did that normally, I'd go to work and do shows or do whatever because I could travel on a Friday."
It's worth noting that Goldberg's contract with "The View" reportedly extends until the summer of 2024, with an annual compensation of $8 million for her four-day-a-week co-hosting role.
In addition to her comments about "The View," Goldberg shared a delightful anecdote from her recent trip to Rome, where she had an audience with Pope Francis. "Listen, I was with the Pope the other day, and I said to Francis, 'I'm going to get this award.' And he said, 'Bless you,'" she recounted during her acceptance speech for the FGI's American Icon Award.
This encounter with the Pope seems to tie in with Goldberg's ongoing work on "Sister Act 3," the sequel to the 1992 hit comedy. "Sister Act is coming, and I want to get that up and out... It'll be interesting," she told The Sun.
Goldberg joined "The View" as a co-host and moderator in 2007, taking over from Rosie O'Donnell. Over the years, she has become an integral part of the show, often steering discussions and providing her unique perspective on various topics.
While the future remains uncertain, for now, fans of "The View" can take solace in the fact that Goldberg has no immediate plans to leave the show. Her candid remarks and clarifications put to rest, at least temporarily, the swirling rumors about her departure.
