Prince William's composure at Prince Philip's funeral in April 2021 is drawing renewed scrutiny after a body language expert pointed to moments of "rapid and frequent blinking" and a visible jaw clench during the service at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, suggesting possible signs of stress beneath a carefully maintained royal exterior.

The observations, published by celebrity outlet Nicki Swift following analysis by Damali Peterman, Esq., come from footage of the April 17, 2021 ceremony, which was conducted under strict coronavirus restrictions. The funeral limited attendance to 30 mourners, producing stark imagery-including Queen Elizabeth II seated alone-that resonated globally.

Peterman, a conflict resolution expert, lawyer, mediator and CEO and founder of BreakthroughADR, offered an initial assessment of William's demeanor. "First glimpse of Prince William ... stoic, serious expression like the rest of the royals," she said, noting that outdoor mask exemptions allowed viewers to clearly see facial expressions during the procession.

In one outdoor shot, Peterman observed what she described as a subtle but noticeable tightening of the jaw. "There was a shot of William clenching his teeth. The muscle jumping on the side of his face makes it clear," she said. Still, she cautioned against definitive conclusions, adding that the gesture could reflect anything from "trying to stay awake" to "trying not to show emotion" or "processing information," emphasizing that "there is no way to tell with certainty [why William was doing so]."

Inside St. George's Chapel, during a reading from Ecclesiasticus, Peterman highlighted William's "rapid and frequent blinking." Although William wore a face mask indoors, his eyes remained visible on camera, becoming the focal point of interpretation.

Peterman stressed the limitations of body language analysis. "Body language is not a monolith," she said, explaining that there is "no one way that is universal for everyone" and adding, "I have no idea of what Prince William's blinking baseline is."

She outlined a range of possible explanations for increased blinking, stating it "could [have been] due to many things," including "trying to stay awake, trying not to cry, trying to focus, trying to maintain stoicism, [or] processing data." In other remarks, she suggested it might indicate "stress, nerves, or trouble," while also allowing that blinking changes can occur when someone is "comfortable or relaxed."

The funeral unfolded against the backdrop of reported tensions between William and Prince Harry. In a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey weeks earlier, Harry had described their relationship as "'space' at the moment." Footage of the brothers walking together after the service prompted further speculation.

Peterman noted that William's "body language and walking stride was more relaxed" during that exchange, adding that it appeared there was "no conflict between them." Yet she ultimately concluded that William's eyes and overall demeanor "did not reveal anything outside of the norm of what we have come to expect from the royals," observing that he "was born into a duty that was on full display during his grandfather's funeral."
