Federal immigration enforcement actions at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn escalated into a late-night confrontation after agents removed a detained man from the facility, drawing protests, injuries and arrests, according to reporting from The New York Times and local outlets.
The Department of Homeland Security identified the individual as Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national accused of overstaying a visa. Authorities said the man had initially been transported to the hospital following his arrest and later discharged before agents moved to take him into custody.
Video footage widely circulated online shows federal agents dragging a handcuffed man down a short staircase and across pavement before placing him into a waiting vehicle. Witness accounts cited by amNewYork described the scene in stark terms. "They were dragging a Black man in handcuffs on the floor," one eyewitness said, adding that an agent pointed what appeared to be pepper spray at onlookers.
The situation intensified as crowds gathered outside the hospital. Reports indicate that between 100 and 200 protesters assembled late Saturday night, attempting to block exits and prevent the detainee's removal. The standoff lasted several hours, with police responding to multiple emergency calls about access points being obstructed.
The New York Police Department said it had no advance knowledge of the operation and did not coordinate with federal immigration authorities. Officials stated officers were deployed solely to manage public safety concerns, including crowd control and maintaining access to the hospital.
Authorities confirmed injuries on both sides. According to amNewYork, at least one police sergeant and three officers required treatment after exposure to pepper spray, which officials believe was deployed by federal agents. Protesters also reported injuries during clashes, though the extent and nature of those injuries remain unclear.
Eight individuals were arrested during the confrontation. Police said charges include reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and obstruction, reflecting what officials described as efforts to interfere with law enforcement activity.
Additional footage reported by THE CITY appears to show further use of force during the incident. The video depicts an agent deploying what appears to be a Taser on a man lying on the ground, though it has not been definitively confirmed whether the individual is the same detainee later seen at the hospital.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that the detainee became combative during the process, a claim that has not been independently verified. The agency has not released further details about the sequence of events leading to the hospital discharge and subsequent removal.
