The controversy erupted after Kidman posted a throwback photograph featuring her daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, alongside the caption: "My two girls are everything to me." The image was shared from the actress's U.S. home during Mother's Day celebrations earlier this month.
Online reaction was immediate, with commenters questioning why Kidman did not mention Isabella "Bella" Cruise, 32, and Connor Cruise, 30, whom she adopted during her marriage to Cruise in the 1990s.
"What about your other 2, just because you don't have a relationship with them doesn't mean you disregard their existence," one commenter wrote. Another added: "Even if the other two kids chose not to be in my life, I'd still acknowledge them."
The backlash forced a visible edit to the original post. Kidman later changed the caption to read: "To my beautiful girls, the greatest joy is being your mother. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers in the world," followed by heart emojis.
The timing intensified interest because the social media controversy arrived alongside reports of major upheaval in Kidman's personal life. At the same time, Australian tabloids including Woman's Day reported that Kidman had recently experienced a thaw in relations with Bella and Connor following the September 2024 death of her mother, Janelle Kidman.
