Demi Moore has stepped into an increasingly contentious custody dispute involving her daughter, Rumer Willis, adding a new chapter to a family that has already endured years of personal challenges following Bruce Willis's frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.

Court filings reviewed by People magazine have brought fresh attention to the legal battle between Rumer Willis and her former partner, Derek Richard Thomas, over custody arrangements concerning their three-year-old daughter, Louetta. The dispute has expanded beyond questions of parenting into competing allegations about the nature of the former couple's relationship, drawing Moore directly into the proceedings.

The conflict arrives at a particularly sensitive moment for the Moore-Willis family. Since Bruce Willis publicly stepped away from acting after his diagnosis in 2023, the family has projected an image of unity, with Demi Moore remaining closely involved in supporting her former husband alongside daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah.

Now, that close-knit family structure is being tested by a custody battle that has become increasingly public.

According to documents cited by People, Rumer Willis opposed Thomas's request for a child custody order and alleged that he engaged in a "persistent pattern" of "insane emotional abuse." She claimed the behavior occurred frequently, including in the presence of their daughter, and left Louetta emotionally affected. The allegations have not been proven in court and remain contested.

Moore has reportedly aligned herself firmly behind her daughter's position. A source quoted in the report described the actress as being fully focused on protecting both Rumer and her granddaughter.

"Demi is in mamma bear mode, not only is she feeling like she has to protect Rumer, but she's also got her three-year-old granddaughter to worry about," the source said. "Louetta is really the focus of this. Rumer has accused Derek of being abusive, so of course, Demi doesn't want him near her family, and she's doing everything possible to keep him away."

The source added that the legal fight has taken an emotional toll on the family.

"It's turned very ugly, and it's causing Demi and Rumer so much anxiety; neither of them is sleeping properly - the stakes are just too high," the insider said.

One of the most significant elements of the latest filings involves allegations surrounding Louetta's birth. According to reports, Moore submitted her own declaration describing what she witnessed during the home-birth experience.

In that statement, Moore alleged, "[Thomas] had no consideration to Rumer, the baby, the process or anyone else for that matter. He essentially ruined what should've been one of the happiest moments of [Rumer's] life."

The allegation suggests concerns within the relationship may have existed well before the couple's eventual separation. According to accounts cited in the filings, Moore viewed the birth experience as an early indication of behavior that later became a source of conflict.

Rumer Willis has also publicly discussed the breakdown of the relationship, though in less direct terms. During an appearance on The Inside Edit Podcast with Maeve Reilly, she reflected on realizing that her future with Thomas did not resemble the type of partnership she wanted.

"Your wedding literally was a huge reckoning moment for me in my life," Willis said. "I heard your vows, and I just realised that the situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in."

She described the relationship as "brutal" and "challenging," adding: "I need to go and like, leave, no matter how scared I am and find something that looks like this, because I want that."

Thomas has strongly disputed the accusations. In court filings supporting his custody request, he presented a sharply different account of the relationship.

"[Our] relationship was unhealthy and appropriately came to an end, but it was not all characterised by any violence, physical or emotional attacks or intimidation on my part," Thomas stated.

According to reports, he has denied allegations of abuse and maintains that he wants to remain actively involved in his daughter's life. Thomas has since entered a new relationship with artist Lizzie Loch.
