Sean "Diddy" Combs is now projected to leave federal prison earlier than previously expected, according to updated records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, as the music mogul continues to pursue an appeal of his criminal conviction while serving a sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey.
Federal prison records show Combs' projected release date has been moved to 23 February 2028, marking the latest in a series of adjustments that have gradually shortened his expected time in custody. The revised date comes months after earlier projections placed his release in April and, before that, later in the spring of 2028.
The update arrives less than a year after Combs was sentenced in one of the most closely watched celebrity criminal cases in recent years. Following a lengthy federal trial in New York, a jury convicted the music executive on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution under the Mann Act.
At the same time, jurors acquitted Combs of more serious allegations, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion. The split verdict spared him from charges that carried significantly harsher penalties while still resulting in a substantial prison term.
Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced Combs on 3 October 2025 to 50 months in federal prison. The court also imposed a $500,000 fine and ordered five years of supervised release following completion of his custodial sentence.
The sentence reflected credit for time Combs had already spent in detention after his September 2024 arrest. By the time formal service of the prison term began in late 2025, approximately 14 months of pretrial detention had already been counted toward his sentence.
The Bureau of Prisons has not publicly explained the most recent adjustment to Combs' projected release date. However, federal prison calculations routinely change based on several factors, including:
- Good conduct time credits
- Participation in approved rehabilitation programs
- Educational and vocational activities
- Pre-sentencing detention credits
One factor drawing particular attention is Combs' participation in the Residential Drug Abuse Program, commonly known as RDAP. The intensive rehabilitation initiative can provide eligible inmates with sentence reductions of up to one year upon successful completion.
The possibility of additional credit has fueled speculation about why Combs' projected release date has steadily moved forward since his sentencing. Corrections experts note that such adjustments are common within the federal prison system and do not necessarily indicate special treatment.
A recent social media post highlighted the latest revision. Deadline wrote on X that, "Diddy is set right now to be let out of the Garden State's FCI Fort Dix on February 23, 2028, according to the Bureau of Prisons. That's the third cut in Combs' sentence in the past few months as it went to April 23 last fall and then more recently to April 15."
While serving his sentence, Combs remains engaged in a parallel legal battle. His attorneys have appealed both the conviction and sentence, arguing that the verdict should be overturned. The appellate process is expected to continue for months and could potentially extend into 2027.
Beyond the criminal case, Combs also faces multiple civil lawsuits alleging misconduct. He has denied wrongdoing in those matters, and the cases remain separate from the federal conviction that led to his imprisonment.
