First Lady Melania Trump's absence from two prominent presidential appearances-an official trip to China and the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham-has intensified speculation about her relationship with Lara Trump, who has increasingly appeared beside President Donald Trump at ceremonial and diplomatic events. No member of the Trump family has publicly confirmed a dispute, and the White House has offered no evidence that the absences were connected to family tensions.
The latest questions emerged after Lara Trump stood near the president during Graham's funeral at Washington National Cathedral on July 28. Melania didn't attend the service, despite issuing a written statement earlier in the month mourning the South Carolina Republican and describing him as a dedicated public servant.
Lara's presence drew additional attention because it followed her participation in a high-profile U.S. delegation to Beijing in May. She joined her husband, Eric Trump, along with Elon Musk, Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, appearing in photographs during meetings involving Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Before that trip, Lara posted a photograph with members of the delegation, including Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, and captioned it "Team CHYYYYYNA," accompanied by American and Chinese flag emojis. Melania remained in the U.S., with her office offering only a brief explanation.
"First Lady Melania Trump is not travelling this time," her office said, without providing further detail.
The absence stood out because Melania had accompanied Trump during his 2017 visit to China, participating in cultural and educational events that included calligraphy and astronomy activities. Her decision not to join the later trip therefore became part of a broader discussion about her more limited public schedule during the president's second term.
Lara's increasingly visible role has occasionally caused confusion. During a recent Fox & Friends broadcast, host Brian Kilmeade mistakenly referred to her as the first lady while she was seen leaving Air Force One behind Trump. A co-host corrected him on air, but the mistake added to the perception that Lara has assumed some of the public-facing responsibilities normally associated with the president's spouse.
Reports describing the relationship between Melania and Lara as "stiff" remain unverified. Neither woman has publicly accused the other of hostility, and their occasional public interactions don't establish the existence of a feud. Tracy Higgs, described as an astrology specialist, said the two could avoid open confrontation while still experiencing tension involving status, image and influence, but that assessment wasn't based on direct knowledge of the family.
Lara has also publicly defended Melania. After Jimmy Kimmel joked in April that the first lady looked like an "expectant widow" ahead of the White House Correspondents' Dinner, Lara criticized the late-night host and said comedy was no longer funny, while supporting calls for his removal from the network.
The circumstances surrounding Melania's absence from Graham's funeral may also involve security considerations. One day before the service, Iran's Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, published an AI-generated video that identified locations associated with Melania and referenced possible attacks targeting her and Barron Trump.
