Secrecy continues to surround the ongoing construction of the Shimao Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center, which will become China's tallest building and the world's second tallest skyscraper when completed in 2024.
The 668 meter-high mega tall skyscraper is being built at the Longgang District in eastern Shenzhen. Industry sources said the building's floor surface area will total 321,900 square meters (3.4 million square feet). The building will easily surpass the Shanghai Tower, which is China's tallest building at 632 meters.
Only the 828 meter-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest in the world, will exceed the Shimao Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center in height.
Shimao Property Holdings, Ltd, the skyscraper's developer, hasn't released important design details about the tower. What is known is this group has invested $7.5 billion in the project. The tower will be part of a larger complex that includes hotels, apartments, corporate offices, shopping centers, a convention center and international schools at the Longgang District.
The construction of the tower continues Shenzhen's building boom. About to be completed in Shenzhen Bay area is the 400 meter-high China Resources Tower. The Shimao Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center and the China Resources Tower will join the Ping An Finance Center as among the tallest skyscrapers in the city. In 2017, more skyscrapers were completed in Shenzhen than any other city in the world.
Based in Hong Kong, Shimao Property Holdings is one of the largest property developers in all of China. It develops large-scale residential projects, hotels, and other commercial buildings in prime locations. Its land bank amounts to 36.2 million square meters, making it one of the top real estate developers in China in land bank size.
