There is only a couple of weeks left before the film adaptation of Kevin Kwan's best-selling novel "Crazy Rich Asians" hit the big screen. With that, details on the upcoming romantic comedy-drama film have finally been revealed.
"Crazy Rich Asians" follows a Chinese-American professor, Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), who finally meets her boyfriend's (Henry Golding) parents after dating for years. She, then, found out that her boyfriend comes from one of the well-known and wealthiest families in Singapore.
There, Rachel Chu struggles to be acknowledged by her boyfriend's family -- the domineering mother, Eleanor Sung-Young (Michelle Yeoh) and the matriarch of the family, grandmother Shang Su Yi (Lisa Lu) -- considering that they come from different socioeconomic status and had different opinions and life experiences.
"You hear the words representation and diversity," Wu, 36, said on diversity in "Crazy Rich Asians," as quoted by Vulture. "People want to see that. But what's special about this film is it differentiates Asians from the Asian-American experience. A lot of times they think putting in a face of color and filling a quota. Our culture is more than skin deep," the actress added.

Aside from its intriguing storyline, "Crazy Rich Asians" is continuously making noise. One of the much-talked issues about the movie is the casting of Golding who is said to be a half-British and half-Malaysian.
With that, the "Surviving Borneo" host has responded to the criticism of him being cast as the male lead, Nick Young. In a recent interview, according to Cinema Blend, the 31-year-old actor reiterated that he is an Asian completely and that there is nothing he needed to prove to the public.
In addition to the above-mentioned characters, the much-awaited film adaptation will also see Gemma Chan as Astrid Leong-Teo, Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin, Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng, Ken Jeong as Goh Wye Mu, Victoria Loke as Fiona Tung-Cheng, Selena Tan as Alexandra 'Alix' Young and Nico Santos as Oliver T'sien. They will also be joined by Tan Kheng Hua as Kerry Chu, Ken Jeong as Goh Wye Mun, Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin and Koh Chieng Mun as Peik Lin's mother.
"Crazy Rich Asians," which is helmed by director Jon M. Chu, is set to be released on Aug. 15 in the United States and Aug. 22 in Malaysia. While waiting, you may check out the two-minute trailer below:
