"The Meg" fans, rejoice! The science fiction horror-thriller film, which stars Jason Statham and Li Bingbing, continues its box office reign with a total of $146 million worldwide, beating out "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" and "Christopher Robin."
"The Meg" has grossed $45.4 million in the United States and Canada and another $101.5 million in other territories. Taking the second spot was the Tom Cruise-starrer action spy film, "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," with $20 million, according to comScore, as cited by South China Morning Post.
Coming in at No. 3 was Marc Forster's fantasy comedy film "Christopher Robin" with $12.4 million. "Slender Man" and "BlacKkKlansman" landed in the fourth and fifth place with $11.3 million and $10.8 million, respectively.
Rounding out the top ten were "The Spy Who Dumped Me" with $6.6 million, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" with $5.8 million, "The Equalizer 2" with $5.5 million, "Hotel Transylvania 3" with $5.1 million and "Ant-Man and the Wasp" with only $4 million.
The news of "The Meg" dominating the box office comes as no surprise considering its promising storyline. The science fiction horror-thriller film, directed by Jon Turteltaub, follows a team of scientists caught in a submersible after they encounter a 75-foot-long Megalodon shark.
As the time runs out, former Naval Captain and expert deep-sea diver, Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), is enlisted by a Chinese oceanographer Dr. Minway Zhang (Winston Chao) and his daughter Suyin Zhang (Li Bingbing), to spare the lives of the scientists including his ex-wife, Lori (Jesica McNamee).
Following the release of "The Meg," Jason Statham has nothing but praise for his co-star, Li Bingbing, who also starred in 2012's "Resident Evil: Retribution" and 2014's "Transformers: Age of Extinction." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 51-year-old English actor said that the latter is a great actress and is fun to be with.
"We had great chemistry," Jason Statham said. "We have a sort of frosty kind of relationship, but it warms up a little bit. We have some great scenes together, and we were in and out of the water a lot. It's a tough shoot, you know... Sometimes your patience gets a little bit thin and the water's cold. But she was great to work with and a real sweetheart," he added.
"The Meg" also stars Masi Oka as Toshi, Rainn Wilson as Jack Morris, Olafur Darri Olafsson as The Wall, Cliff Curtis as James "Mac" Mackreides," Robert Taylor as Dr. Heller, Shuya Sophia Cai as Meiying, Page Kennedy as DJ, and Ruby Rose as Jaxx Herd.
