"They were all crucial moments for her recovery," an insider said, calling Bieber "toxic influence," adding "Her early fame, the relationship with Justin and the easy access to the party lifestyle was the root of all her problems."
According to In Touch, after Gomez watched her good friend Demi Lovato self-destruct, she realized that she didn't want to go on the same path. "She's been to hell and back, and she refused to let fame destroy her," the insider further added.
Last year was particularly rough for Gomez as she went into a kidney transplant, which was necessary because of her autoimmune disease lupus. In October, Gomez broke up with The Weeknd and got back with Bieber later on, and a friend said to In Touch during that time that, "Justin creates havoc in Selena's life."
However, Gomez and Bieber split once again.
"She ended it once and for all," the source revealed. "It was life-changing. She knew that if she had the strength to end things with Justin for good, she was capable of achieving anything."
This 2018, the two Gomez finally got him out of her system and ditched some of her "superficial" friends too.
"She's dropped all of her fake celebrity friends and acquaintances," the source added, wherein the singer went on a social media to unfollow some "friends," and stopped worrying about the comments of other people.
Gomez took her time and focused on herself.
"[I've done] a lot of self-discovery. I feel like a totally different person," she told Elle. Now, she is working five days a week with an anti-human trafficking charity.
"She gives back to people less fortunate, she writes music, she prays and she meditates every day to stay positive," the insider said and noted that Gomez is also working on her new album. "She's living life to the fullest, not taking anything for granted. She knows she's been given a second chance, and she's not messing that up."
