After Jennifer Aniston revealed she is not brokenhearted after her split with Justin Theroux, the "The Leftovers" star finally broke his silence about their breakup. The two broke a lot of hearts when they called it quits in February after two years of marriage, but the 47-year-old actor assured it was "painless."
In an interview with The New York Times, Theroux talked about his divorce with Aniston. "It was kind of the most gentle [sic] separation, in that there was no animosity," he said. The comedian admitted he carefully chose his words while doing the talk.
Theroux even made fun of their separation when he joked neither he nor Aniston is dead or even trying to throw hatches at each other. "It's amicable," he added. The former couple has a lot of respect for each other that their split became as painless as possible.
However, Theroux admitted he could not help but be sad knowing his relationship with Aniston would never be the same. Their split became heartbreaking as it might affect their friendship. But just like any bond, "shifting and changing" is inevitable and they are proud of that.
Theroux believed their unproblematic divorce is because of their respective careers in Hollywood. He gave credit to their "carny lifestyle" that made the breakup easy for him and Aniston. "[A split] doesn't have that seismic shift of an ordinary couple, where everything is, like, you have to tear a baby in half," he explained.
But it is a different case for the media. Ever since Aniston and Theroux announced their split, the rumors about the two emerge here and there. The "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" star admitted the exhausting part of battling the gossips is "navigating the inevitable perception of it." Things could be worse if people would make the headline "big" and scandalous.
Theroux and Aniston announced their split in a joint statement in February, per Marie Claire. The ex-couple revealed the decision was mutual. They decided to call it quits at the end of 2017 but only announced it two months after.
Theroux and Aniston chose to announce their divorce together to alleviate the rumors about them. They explained they decided to part ways as best friends and they would continue to cherish the friendship they have.
"Normally we would do this privately," they said. But as they believed the "gossip industry" would take advantage of the moment to invent stories about them, they wanted to talk about it personally.
