The future of "Sherlock" Season 5 remains up in the air, but fans are hopeful to see the fan-favorite detective Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his sidekick Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) back to the small screen. BBC has yet to renew the British crime drama series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories, but there are some hints that the show will return.

Cumberbatch earlier revealed he is open to returning to "Sherlock" Season 5. Although there is no official announcement about the series' renewal, the 42-year-old actor strongly believes the show will continue. It is just that its creators and writers are still busy.

"Mark been [sic] doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series," Cumberbatch said about "Sherlock" Season 5, per OtakuKart. "The idea of never playing him again is really galling."

Fans perfectly know it takes a couple of years before a new season comes out, so it will also probably happen in "Sherlock" Season 5. But there are rumors a new installment will come earlier than expected.

Chris Georgiou, a source close to the series' production and the owner of Speedy's Café near 221B Baker Street, revealed important information about "Sherlock" Season 5. This bar provides snacks and drinks to the show's staff and crew, and he reportedly got a call that they are coming back.

"I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I've heard they'll be coming back for a fifth season," he told Time Out about "Sherlock" Season 5's filming. Although it does not confirm the official return of the series, it is a good hint that the show will be in the works.

However, Mark Gatiss slammed this report and said that Georgiou's revelation is "utter nonsense," according to Digital Spy. But his co-creator and writer Steven Moffat earlier confirmed "Sherlock" Season 5 would surely come.

He said no one closes its door to the show; they only do not have an "immediate plan" about it yet. But as they all remain positive about it, he will be surprised if there will be no "Sherlock" Season 5 coming in the works. "When I don't know... A longer gap? They're always long gaps!" he said.

As Moffat is now free from doing "Doctor Who" and Cumberbatch has yet to work on "Doctor Strange," they now have the time to make "Sherlock" Season 5. Fans only have to wait for its official announcement from the network and its creators.
