Selena Gomez was once the queen of Instagram, with over millions of followers to her resume. The American singer-songwriter has been dethroned.

According to InStyle, Selena Gomez just lost her Instagram royalty. It is worth noting that she has held the crown as the social media's most-followed page since 2016. Unfortunately for her, it was soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo who dethroned her.

Ronaldo has been playing catch up with Selena Gomez for quite some time now. Earlier today, however, he finally took the reins from her and became the most-followed user on Instagram. As of press time, he has about 144, 327, 117 followers. Gomez, on the other hand, only had 144,316, 079 followers.

The sudden drop comes a month after the Selena Gomez announced that she would be steering clear from social media. Although she did say that it is just a quick break, she did not mention any date of a comeback. At that time, she told her fans about her desire to seek mental health treatment. The 26-year-old singer-songwriter has not been on the platform since September 23. As for Ronaldo, who is currently under fire for various sexual assault allegations, he posted two updates on his official page.

Of course, there is every possibility for Selena Gomez to regain her former Instagram glory back. After all, she has not been active on the platform. Hence, it only makes sense for these things to happen.

Elle reports that Selena Gomez has been vocal about her relationship with the social media network. She even explained why she no longer has the app. In an interview, she said that she is "not on the internet." Not only that, but she also mentioned not having the password to her Instagram account.

Selena Gomez said that her decision to veer away from social media is because it is not really "real" for her. In another interview, she was asked about what she feels about being the most-followed Instagram user. She explained that while she appreciates the milestone, it does not matter to her. "I don't care how many followers I have," she said.

It is worth noting that in the past few months Selena Gomez was taken to the hospital twice. The second hospitalization saw her experiencing an "emotional breakdown." This eventually forced her to check herself in a mental health facility. The hospitalization was due to her having a low count of white blood cells.
