If fans feel upset that George R.R. Martin has yet to finish "The Winds of Winter," the 70-year-old author is more upset of himself. While promoting his new book, "Fire & Blood," the renowned novelist talked about working with "A Song of Ice and Fire" sixth installment and why it was easier to finish his latest novel.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, George R.R. Martin said that finishing House Targaryen's history in "Fire & Blood" was emotionally uplifting for him. But, he was still mad he still hasn't finished "The Winds of Winter" yet.
George R.R. Martin admitted that he experienced dark nights where he pounded his head against the keyboard. He even came to the point that he questioned himself if he would ever finish "The Winds of Winter." "God, will I ever finish this?" he said.
He went on to say HBO's "Game of Thrones" is now on Season 8 and is about to end. As the show goes further and further, the "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel series falls further and further. So, he told himself that he has to do "The Winds of Winter" now.
The Wall Street Journal reported that George R.R. Martin is now hiding in a "remote mountain hideaway, so he can finish writing "The Winds of Winter." This place is said to be a cabin that the "Fire & Blood" writer often visits to finish a book, and he is now working hard to get it done.
Talking about "Fire & Blood," George R.R. Martin managed to finish it early than "The Winds of Winter" because it is far more linear than the original story. He went on to say that the new book is "very straightforward" as it only tells the story that happened from 150 years ago, per Winter is Coming.
Unlike in "The Winds of Winter," George R.R. Martin has to write different stories about the fan-favorite characters and how they will meet together. "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel series is far more complicated to write than its history book as he has a lot of voices to follow.
The "Fire & Blood" only has Archmaester Gyldayn's voice. In "The Winds of Winter," on the other hand, George R.R. Martin has to switch voices every new chapter. The characters also have different styles and voices, their cast and supporting characters in different phases, so it takes a lot of time to do it.
