Jake Gyllenhaal finally put speculations to rest about his involvement in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home. The actor officially confirmed that he is playing the villain role of Mysterio.

The rumors have been going on for months during the filming of Spider-Man: Far From Home and continued even after shooting finished. Gyllenhaal never addressed the speculations until recently when he celebrated his arrival to Instagram with a nod at Mysterio.

The actor shared a video of himself flipping through the #311 issue of the Amazing Spider-Man comics with the name Mysterio clearly visible on the front page. He then lowered the comic and exclaimed "Woah...what the f***." He captioned the video with a reference to his role in the sequel.

"I just realized I'm not playing Spider-Man."

Gyllenhaal's attempt at a joke about not playing Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home did not go unnoticed by his fellow Marvel stars. Tom Holland, who plays no other than the web crawler himself, was quick to point out his realization that he is playing Spider-Man. The actor added a smile emoji.

Likewise, Mark Rufallo, who plays Bruce Banner aka The Hulk, commented that he too is not playing spidey and wrote "same." Zendaya, who returns as MJ in Spider-Man: Far From Home, simply added clap emojis.

However, the best interaction came from Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds. Gyllenhaal had a quick friendly banter with the actor over his caption.

"I just realized I'm not playing Spider-Man either," Reynolds wrote to which Gyllenhaal replied, "You're not even playing Ryan Reynolds anymore."

Gyllenhaal's post has since received 294, 358 likes as of this writing and over 15,000 comments. Fans expressed their excitement to see the actor in the film, while others welcomed the notoriously private celebrity to Instagram. The actor has been vocal about his reluctance to join the social media fray.

Spider-Man: Far From Home airs in 2019 and kicks off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be Mysterio's first cinematic appearance and he is bound to bring another level of action and challenge for our friendly neighbor Spider-Man when he forms an alliance with Vulture (Michael Keaton).

In the Marvel comics, Mysterio is a special effects and illusions wizard who used his expertise on Spider-Man. He became one of the superhero's most elusive foes. Perhaps fans will see their first glimpse at Gyllenhaal's supervillain role when the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives on Saturday during the Sony panel at the Brazil Comic-Con.
