K-drama fans are in for a treat! The popular television series "Younger," starring American actress and singer Sutton Lenore Foster, will be remade for South Korean audiences.
On Monday, Dec. 10, cable television network JTBC announced that Paramount Network had sold the scripted format of "Younger" to them for a local remake of the hit comedy-drama show.
"Younger," based on the novel of the same name by Pamela Redmond Satran, follows a 40-year-old divorced mother, Liza Miller (Sutton Lenore Foster), who pretends to be in her 20s to get a job and support herself and her teenage daughter, Caitlin Miller (Tessa Albertson).
Luckily, she lands a job as assistant to Diana Trout (Miriam Shor), the head of marketing at the publishing firm Empirical Press. There, she befriends Kelsey Peters (Hilary Duff), an ambitious 26-year-old book editor.
Created and produced by Darren Star ("Sex and the City" and "Beverly Hills"), the comedy-drama series premiered in March 2015, and since then, it generally received positive reviews from the viewers and critics. The sixth season is currently in production and expected to air on Paramount Network sometime in 2019.
"We have made the decision to do a remake of the series because we were drawn to the show's strong female character and great storyline," an official from JTBC cable network said in a press statement obtained by Korean news outlet Sports DongA, as cited by Soompi. "We will do our best to captivate viewers by creating a good Korean remake that also reflects today's society in Korea."
The South Korean remake of "Younger" will be directed by PD Kim Seong Yoon, whose previous works include the popular 2016 historical drama "Love in the Moonlight," 2012's "Big," and 2010's "The Great Merchant." It marks his first project under JTBC after leaving his longtime home network, KBS 2TV.
While nothing is set in stone yet, several K-drama enthusiasts are already dropping names as to who will play the iconic role of Liza Miller. The names of fan favorites such as Jang Na Ra (who is known for her role as Ma Jin Joo and Kim Mi Young in 2017's "Go Back Couple" and 2014's "Fated To Love You," respectively) and Jung In Sun (who gained widespread fame after starring in "Terius Behind Me" and "Welcome to Waikiki") have come up.
The JTBC remake of "Younger" is set to premiere sometime in 2020. More in-depth details about the project will be revealed soon.
