"Bird Box," the Sandra Bullock movie about the end of the civilization, featured a swarm of mysterious creatures that wiped out half the human race. However, the images of the monsters were never shown throughout the film's two-hour run thus drawing more curiosity from the viewers about what the creatures look like.
Bullock plays a mom named Malorie in the movie. She is trying to protect two children from the creatures by keeping themselves blindfolded.
The actress shared that they shot a scene that showed the monsters true form. But director Susanne Bier decided to cut this during editing because of Bullock.
The actress confessed that she could not help but laugh at the monster's appearance while filming the movie. She described the creatures as snake-like green men with a horrible baby face, which did not terrify her at all.
"Bird Box" screenwriter Eric Heisserer wrote the monster's appearance into the script upon the insistence of one of the producers, who thought it was important for viewers to get a glimpse of the creature. Bier, however, said that there's no way viewers would be convinced of the monsters' chilling effect on people if the star of the movie wasn't convinced.
So, the director decided that the creatures would remain unseen in the film. The one time the faces of the monsters were shown in the movie was through a set of drawings from an infected survivor, Gary (Tom Hollander). His rendering showed that the monsters either looked like praying mantis or flying skeletons.
"Bird Box" is an adaptation of a novel that Josh Malerman published in 2014. It featured three timelines: the invasion while Malorie was still pregnant, a few years after giving birth when Malorie continued to survive the invasion with two children and a partner, and five years later to the present day when Malorie and the kids attempted to raft through the river to get to a haven.
The film has been compared to the summer blockbuster "A Quiet Place," which showed how humans survived an alien invasion by never uttering a word because the creatures hunted for sound. Only, in "Bird Box," humans needed to stay blindfolded if they ventured outside to avoid becoming a prey to the monsters' hypnotic influence.
Aside from Bullock and Hollander, the film also features Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich, Trevante Rhodes, Jackie Weaver, Danielle MacDonald, B.D. Wong, Lil Rey Howery, Parminder Nagra, and Pruitt Taylor Vince. Playing the children are Vivien Lyra Blair and Julian Edwards. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix and select theaters across the U.S.
