Although Lucasfilm and Disney remain mum about "Star Wars: Episode IX," little details about the movie are now emerging. John Boyega, who plays the role of Finn, revealed there would be a major time jump in the film, and it might hint its possible plotline.
In an interview with Empire magazine, via JOE, John Boyega revealed "Star Wars: Episode IX" would begin a year after Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) fight with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."
The time jump differs from "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which exactly picked up where "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" left off. However, it would give the franchise enough time to make major decisions, like General Leia's future after Carrie Fisher died, and how Kylo Ren would lead the First Order.
However, Esquire reported the time jump might hint "Star Wars: Episode IX" possible plotline. To recall, in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," the First Order defeated the Resistance. The remaining protagonists successfully managed to escape and would find a safe place to prepare themselves for another battle.
The time jump between the two movies seems to resemble the events of "The Empire Strikes Back, which also has two to 5 years time skip. The Empire built the fallen Death Star for a couple of years after it got destroyed in "A New Hope." When the franchise returned in "Return of the Jedi," Luke already honed his skills and became a Jedi master.
So when "Star Wars: Episode IX" returns, there is a big possibility that Rey (Daisy Ridley) already mastered the Force and a Jedi master herself. Aside from Rey, there are also questions about how J.J. Abrams will handle General Leia's story after Carrie Fisher died in 2016.
Disney recently confirmed fans would still see Carrie Fisher in "Star Wars: Episode IX" through unused footages from the previous films. These clips might show what happened in a year before "Episode IX" takes place.
Fans should only take these assumptions with a grain of salt as Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to announce "Star Wars: Episode IX" official plotline. The two firms also have yet to reveal the movie's official title.
Fans also have to wait and see how J.J. Abrams will handle Carrie Fisher's death as General Leia still has a major role to play in the Resistance's next move against the First Order. Despite the secrecy, "Star Wars: Episode IX" already has a play date on December 20, 2019.
