A number of people have been discussing "Bird Box" on social media in the last week. The film starring Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock has created quite a buzz and inspired a host of memes and gifs online.

Netflix also revealed that 45 million watched "Bird Box" after a week of release on the streaming platform. So, given its popularity, the question on everybody's mind now is -- could a sequel happen?

Josh Malerman, the author of the film's source material that screenwriter Eric Heisserer adapted, hasn't done a follow-up to the story after the book's release in 2014. However, he came out with "Black Mad Wheel" in 2017 which centered on musicians hired by the U.S. government to track down a sound that caused people to lose their sense of hearing but this is obviously a completely separate story than "Bird Box."

As viewers have watched, "Bird Box" concluded with Malorie (Bullock) and her children surviving five years of terror in the midst of unknown creatures attacking people who could see them. Malorie and the kids learned to navigate their environment blindfolded and managed to reach a safe haven where blind people live. But the movie has left more questions than answers for viewers thus opening more ways to set up the sequel's story.

One possible storyline that "Bird Box" part 2 may explore could finally delve on the origin of the monsters. A prequel could expound on how these creatures came about since the first movie did not properly explain what they really are and where they came from.

Another potential "Bird Box" sequel idea could feature the children, Tom (Julian Edwards) and Olympia (Vivien Lyra Blair), as grown-ups. It could show how the kids continued to survive this post-apocalyptic world after they've found the school for the blind with their mom.

The sequel might also feature a different group of survivors or focus on the inhabitants of the school for the blind. It could follow the same timeline as Malorie's journey. However, as Screen Rant pointed out, sequels are always better when there's an established character in the story.

But as popular as the movie has been, there has been no official announcement about a "Bird Box" sequel from Netflix as of press time. Bullock has also not said if she's up for doing part 2 of the suspense thriller. In the meantime, the film is still streaming on Netflix and it's also showing in selected theaters across the U.S.
