Everyone who saw the much-lauded political drama series "Bodyguard" has been wondering if there's a second season. But lead star Richard Madden said the show is unlikely to be back until 2020, if and when it receives a renewal.

The actor recently bagged the Best Actor plum for playing the bodyguard David Budd in the BBC/Netflix program. Despite his win, Madden said that they are not in a rush to return to the set just yet.

Speaking with Daily Mail, Madden said that they have to take a break for at least a year or so if they are going to do "Bodyguard" season 2. The break, which may extend to 2020, will allow the production team to carefully craft a good story because it's very important for the follow up not to be something that was just slapped together and thrown on the screen.

While speaking with The New York Times last December, Madden also said that the new chapter of his character's life would not be so simple. Budd has become recognizable to the public because of what happened in the season 1 finale, so it would be quite a challenge to make him a bodyguard once again.

But Madden also said that he enjoyed playing his character so much that he's eager to revisit it. He also loves that viewing public has responded well to the show so; he's confident that he'll sit down with series creator Jed Mercurio and the other writers some time to discuss what's next for the series.

BBC has not yet officially confirmed "Bodyguard" season 2 despite the show becoming its biggest hit in years. The series finale drew over 10.4 million viewers on the network, and it's also tracking a lot of viewership on Netflix, where it's still streaming.

Meanwhile, Madden told Entertainment Tonight that he's thrilled to be included in conversations about who can potentially play the next James Bond. Daniel Craig is due to portray the role for a fifth and last time in a movie set for 2020. After that, however, a new actor will assume the role. Madden said at this point in time, however, linking him to the James Bond talks is just a rumor.

Madden became a familiar face on television for his stint on "Game of Thrones," where he played the future King of the North, Robb Stark. He was also the prince charming in the live-action adaptation of "Cinderella" with Lily James.
