As a solution to the peak time charging costs that electric car owners are facing, Volkswagen's Electrify America will equip 100 charging stations with Tesla Powerpack battery system.
CNET hints that Volkswagen's Electrify America announced on Monday that they are bringing an answer to the growing peak time charging cost problem that electric car owners are facing. The company announced that 100 charging stations across the US will have their new Tesla's Powerpack battery systems installed.
Each of the 100 charging stations will have the capacity to give 350 kilowatt-hours of charge to a number of electric vehicles. The Tesla's Powerpack 210-kilowatt battery system can bring several empty electric vehicles to a fully charged battery state.
Giovanni Palazzo, Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen's Electrify America released a statement after announcing the installation of Tesla's Powerpack battery system on 100 charging stations. He said that it makes sense for them to use batteries at their most high-demand stations for peak shaving to operate more efficiently.
Palazzo expressed his confidence over the battery system further adding that Tesla's Powerpack system is a natural fit given their global expertise in both battery storage development and Electric Vehicle charging. He said that the system is capable to reduce the grid reliance during the shaving demand peak hours as their stations are offering some of the most technologically advanced charging that is available.
As of the moment, there is still no modern vehicle that is able to accept the 350-kW charging. Once vehicles are made ready to accept such amount of charge, an additional 20 miles of range per minute will be their capability.
It is expected that the installation of Tesla's Powerpack battery system on 100 charging stations across the US will roll out this 2019. After the Monday announcement from Electrify America, rumors then began to spread that the installation will begin this summer.
The effort of lessening the peak time charging cost by installing the Tesla's Powerpack battery system is Electrify America's step as a part of clearing their way with the U.S. regulators after being involved in a diesel emissions cheating scandal.
Volkswagen's Electrify America is taking a serious step in clean energy education and infrastructure implementation. In fact, it has been 10 years since the company started investing $2 billion to make the said goal a reality.
After the installation of the Tesla's Powerpack battery system on 100 charging stations, the Tech Crunch says that Volkwagen's Electrify America aims to release 2,000 charging dispensers on 484 electric vehicles across the US.
