Tech giant OnePlus is set to reveal a gaming phone with 5G capabilities later this month at the Mobile World Congress.
Known for releasing slick, fast-performing smartphones that are not as fast in draining wallets, OnePlus is set to push boundaries farther as it intends to make available to the public a 5G prototype 'gaming phone,' XDA Developers reported.
According to the report, OnePlus' 5G prototype is displayed at the Qualcomm booth. Interested parties can come there to experience for themselves what it's like to play games while connected on a 5G network. Additionally, those who come can experience connecting with the OnePlus community over 5G at the same booth.
For those who wondered why OnePlus is there at the Qualcomm booth, the upcoming smartphone is believed to have the latter's newest processor, the Snapdragon 855, and the X50 modem, both made by Qualcomm. These components will provide the new phone with 5G connectivity.
Gaming prowess
Aside from low selling prices compared to other brands such as Apple and Samsung, OnePlus smartphones are also known for their top-notch performance. Their current flagship, the 6T, for example, allows players to play demanding games with relative ease.
Using GameBench, a service used to measure a device's gaming performance, XDA found that the OnePlus 6T outperforms other gaming-oriented phones on a variety of mobile game titles.
The 6T remarkably outperformed the gaming-oriented phone, the Razer Phone 2, on the game "Player Unknown's Battle Grounds" or "PUBG." It's worth noting, though, that the Razer Phone 2 runs the game on a higher resolution compared to the 6T.
"Asphalt 9," on the other hand, is a graphics-intensive game, but the 6T handles it very easily. Players won't suffer from poor performance, allowing them to enjoy driving their cars at top speeds.
These are but examples of OnePlus' phones' performance when it comes to games. And since the company has had their time to work on their upcoming gaming-oriented device, it is likely that these will perform better than the 6T.
It's interesting to note, however, that, despite its capacity to run demanding games with relative ease, OnePlus didn't mention that the prototype phone is able to download videos faster, play high-definition movies clearer, and allow for smooth streaming. Perhaps it's just a gaming phone with added 5G connectivity, but it'll be clearer in a few weeks' time.
OnePlus is reportedly planning to release the new smartphone by the end of May this year, through the U.K. carrier EE, CNET reported.
