In the wake of George Eads' departure from the MacGyver season 3, two familiar faces will return to help Team Phoenix in its missions. Billy Baldwin, who plays Riley's father, Elwood, and Tate Donovan, who plays Mac's dad, Oversight, are going to be featured in episode 16 and episode 17.
MacGyver season 3 episode 16, titled Lidar + Rogues + Duty, which will air on Friday, Feb. 22, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS, will have Riley (played by Tristan Mays) identifying the hacker who has convinced the SWAT team to arrest her and Elwood, as per the episode synopsis. She and her father will have to work together in this case.
Riley and Elwood used to be estranged and she saw Jack Dalton (played by Eads) as the better father figure. However, Elwood's return indicates that the two might be rebuilding their personal relationship, which could be good for Riley since Jack is no longer with Team Phoenix.
Elsewhere in MacGyver season 3 episode 16, the team has to recover the body of a pilot following a plane crash. The pilot was testing a laser mapping system that, unfortunately, MacGyver (played by Lucas Till) helped design.
MacGyver season 3 episode 17, on the other hand, titled Seeds + Permafrost + Feather, will feature recurring character Oversight. Airing on March 8, this episode will have Mac and Team Phoenix on the search of a man who mysteriously disappears in an ultra-secure vault, according to the episode listing.
Oversight -- also known as James MacGyver, the head of the Phoenix Foundation -- first appeared in the finale of MacGyver season 2 after being absent in his son's life for 20 years. Like Riley, Mac is also learning to trust and connect with his dad again.
Meanwhile, last week's episode, titled K9 + Smugglers + New Recruit, introduced Jack' replacement, Desi Nguyen (played by Levy Tran), and she looks to be a handful, as per TV Line. Desi did not make a good first impression on Mac and she seemed to regret saying yes to Jack's request to "babysit" the team.
It will take a while for Desi and Mac to find their groove with this new arrangement. There doesn't seem to be any chemistry yet though Desi is smart and tactical as Mac's chief security. She looks quite capable of the job.
CBS has not yet confirmed if MacGyver will return for season 4 as of press time and fans of the series are eagerly awaiting an announcement. The show also stars Justin Hires (Wilt) and Meredith Eaton (Matty).
