Criminal Minds season 15 will be the last for the show, so many fans are wondering why it is ending. For those who aren't familiar with Criminal Minds, the series is a long-running police procedural drama and one of the most successful shows on CBS. But, what's the reason why the series is ending?

CBS announced Criminal Minds season 15 will be the last for the series, which will reportedly premiere in autumn 2019, as reported by Otakukart. The network hasn't revealed the release date of the final installment, but the preceding seasons of Criminal Minds premiered between September 20 and October 3, so it's very likely season 15 might air around those times. The upcoming season will reportedly have only 10 episodes, and according to Express, CBS might air it in January or February 2020.

Criminal Minds, which airs on Sky Witness for UK viewers, will reportedly include all familiar faces on the last installments. Some of the cast members expected to return on season 15 are Dr. Spencer Reid (played by Matthew Gray Gubler), Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), as well as David Rossi (Joe Mantegna).

Additionally, other familiar faces from the series' past will likely cameo in some of the finals plots of the show. If everything goes well, Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) will also be on Criminal Minds season 15, and Otakukart noted Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) will make an appearance on the final installment as well, though this wasn't confirmed as it can be recalled he was fired from the show in 2016.

The trailer for the final season of the show was not yet released by CBS or Sky, but fans can expect it for the coming months. The shooting for Criminal Minds season 15 will reportedly start in the spring of 2019, after which, the details about the final plots will surely sure to emerge.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Minds team and CBS haven't revealed the reason as to why the series is ending. But, a report from Deadline noted that the decision to pick up Criminal Minds season 15 was made in late fall when the series' longtime executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer has been breaking the stories for the final episodes of season 14.

They reportedly sought guidance whether to make the ending a season finale with a cliffhanger or a series finale. All parties involved - CBS, ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios - got together and made the decision to extend the series so it would have a proper ending.
