Production for Black Mirror season 5 on Netflix has been in full swing. The streaming platform has confirmed that familiar actors from Avengers and Aquaman will be featured in upcoming episodes.
According to Deadline, Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon in the Avengers franchise, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who was the villain Manta in Aquaman, have scored roles in Black Mirror season 5. It's unclear, however, if the two actors will be working in the same episode or doing separate installments since the show is an anthology series.
Details to their characters have also not been revealed given the nature of the show. But Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker told Red Carpet News TV that they were casting actors most viewers will be familiar with.
Meanwhile, this isn't the first Netflix series for Mackie. The actor has also been filming the sci-fi drama Altered Carbon season 2 for the streaming platform as he takes over the lead role from Joel Kinnaman.
Abdul-Mateen II, on the other hand, has been working on HBO's upcoming superhero drama, Watchmen. He's also starring on the movie sequel of Candyman, with director Jordan Peele.
Aside from Mackie and Abdul-Mateen II, Miley Cyrus categorically confirmed that she is on the cast of Black Mirror season 5. During an interview with Howard Stern on the radio, the pop star opened up about filming in Cape Town, Africa for her episode but she didn't want to say anything more.
Speaking with Hollywood Reporter, however, Cyrus said that they were filming out of the country when her house burned down from the massive Malibu fire last November. She admitted that the experience felt quite weird, but it was perhaps the proudest acting work she has done in recent years.
"I was so far from home, and the show is already really dark, and it's already kind of eerie when you're there the whole time," Cyrus related. "But I learned a lot about myself, and I think I was able to use that and put that into it."
Not all of Black Mirror season 5 will be dark and twisted. According to Brooker, some episodes in the next installment will be light, positive and even funny.
The writer and producer said that they want to infuse more optimistic episodes despite Black Mirror being known for its bleak storylines. This way, the show can continue to be interesting for all types of viewers.
Netflix has not yet announced the premiere date for Black Mirror season 5. Filming the episodes on and off has been happening for most of 2018, so the release date could be out very soon.
