James Cameron's Avatar 2 will not hit theaters until December 2020. While it is still a long way off, many exciting clues as to what the much-awaited sequel could entail are now coming to light.
Avatar 2 is a stand-alone film and will take place beyond the Pandora forests into deep water and volcanos. This time, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) take on more responsibilities as they respectively become the new leader and high priestess of the Omaticaya.
At the same time, Jake Sully and Neytiri must work hand-in-hand in raising their children - Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo'ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss). The trio play a significant role in the entire Avatar franchise as they represent the future generation of Pandora.
"It's a continuation of the same characters, but what happens when warriors that are willing to go on suicide charges, and leap off cliffs on to the back of big orange toruks, what happens when they grow up and have their own kids?" director James Cameron said when asked about Avatar sequels, as quoted by Flickering Myth. "It becomes a very different story. Now the kids are the risk-takers and the change-makers," he stressed.
The addition of new cast members - such as Filip Geljo (known for 2014's Odd Squad and 2016's Odd Squad: The Movie), Bailey Bass (A Little Bit of Heaven), Duane Evans Jr. (Shortland Street), Kate Winslet (Titanic and The Reader) and Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie and The Sopranos) - are something moviegoers should also watch out for.
Joel David Moore returns as Dr. Norm Spellman, Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge, Matt Gerald as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, Jack Champion as Javier "Spider" Socorro, and Dileep Rao as Mr. Max Patel. David Thewlis (Naked) and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones), on the other hand, have been cast in undisclosed roles.
Stephen Lang (Don't Breathe) and Sigourney Weaver (Alien), who respectively portrayed Colonel Miles Quaritch and Dr. Grace Augustine in the first Avatar installment, will reportedly return to the sequel despite the demise of their characters.
Avatar 2, which may be titled as Avatar: The Way of Water, is scheduled to open in theaters across United States on Dec. 18, 2020. It will be followed by the third, fourth and fifth installments with an expected arrival on Dec. 17, 2021, Dec. 20, 2024, and Dec. 19, 2025, respectively.
