Ricky Gervais has started writing After Life season 2. The dark comedy and drama series about a grieving husband named Tony (played by Gervais) who lost his wife (Lisa, played by Kerry Godliman) to cancer is returning to the streaming platform in 2020.

Though the subject matter of After Life may be quite heavy, Netflix subscribers have been enjoying the series and Gervais' brand of humor. Gervais could not believe the reactions he is getting from the viewers, as he posted his appreciation to the good reviews and positive feedback on Twitter.

After Life clicks because it is a funny, realistic and poignant look at what's life like when you have lost someone. The show also sparks the interest of viewers because of Gervais' co-star, a German Shepherd named Brandy.

The actor and writer promised that viewers would see more of the dog in After Life season 2. Also set to return for another round are almost all of the cast members, including Lisa, who appears in the flashbacks.

However, Julian (played by Tim Plester) will not be back in After Life season 2. Viewers saw him die due to overdose in the first season and Gervais confirmed there would be no resurrection on this comedy show.

Meanwhile, After Life season 2's plot may have been revealed during the first season. During one of his cemetery visits, Tony told his friend Anne (played by Penelope Wilton) what he intends to do with the rest of his life.

"I'm going to carry on saying and doing what I want and punishing the world, but I'm going to punish people who deserve it. I'm going to use my superpower for good," the character said in the final episode of the first season.

Gervais started writing the series while doing his stand-up comedy show Humanity in 2017.  He wanted to explore what it's like for someone to go from losing the center of their life -- in this case Tony's wife -- to no longer having any care in the world.

Filming the first season of After Life took place in the summer of 2018. The show eventually premiered on the streaming platform in March 2019 and has been well-received.

Gervais is best known for his work in the U.K. version of The Office. His Hollywood credits include movies like The Invention of Lying and Ghost Town. He has also been the host of the Golden Globes for four times.
