There has been a longstanding theory about Catelyn Stark's (Michelle Fairley) return as Lady Stoneheart. As the dead are now rising through the Night King's (Vladimir 'Furdo' Furdik) command, is it possible to see the House of Stark's matriarch rise from the grave in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3?
Every woman, child, and the man who can't fight will be hiding for safety in the Winterfell crypt in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3, while the castle's army prepares for a battle against the Night King and the White Walkers. However, as the tomb is full of dead, the Night King may raise the deceased from the grave to fight for him, including Catelyn, per Games Radar.
Although the show never confirmed what happened to Catelyn's body after the tragic Red Wedding, there is a big possibility that they buried her in the crypt. If it happens, this scene will give a nod to George R.R. Martin's novel, A Song of Ice and Fire, where the series is based on, that featured Catelyn's return as Lady Stoneheart.
To prove the claim, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) has dreamt of seeing the dead Kings of Winterfell rising from their graves, while Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3 trailer showed Arya (Maisie Williams) running away from something in the dark corridors of the crypt. The show's set images also made the theory stronger when it revealed Sansa's (Sophie Turner) snap with a mysterious figure behind her back.
The Lady of Winterfell seems to be in the crypt as well, but she is being surrounded by clothes. And behind a wardrobe, a face emerged, seeming to be watching over her. Some fans believed it is Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen), while others said it is Catelyn.
According to Metro News, Littlefinger may still be alive and may return in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3. However, it may be impossible for Petry Baelish to get into the crypts with all the guards Sansa has. Also, it is unlikely for a dead Catelyn to lurk around and hide, given that she will be an undead Lady Stoneheart if ever she returns.
The most probable theory is it is only Arya looking after her, although it may also be questionable as to why she has to hide like that. Whoever this guy is, fans will soon find out in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3, which will be out on Sunday, April 28, at 9 p.m. on HBO.
