The 100 season 6 episode 1 premiered on The CW last Tuesday, April 30. While fans were excited about the show's return, they did not expect that the first episode back would play out a shocking death.

A radiated barrier inflicted too much pain on Jordan Bolger's character, Shaw, during the team's exploration into this new planet. Clarke (played by Eliza Taylor) did her best to save him, but she was not successful.

Showrunner Jason Rothenberg explained via TV Line that Shaw's death was the only way out for Bolger's character. They wanted this to be devastating to show just how dangerous is this new planet. In truth, however, they had to kill off Bolger's character since they won't be able to have the actor back in the series.

"Jordan got a job on another show," Rothenberg said. "He's incredible, and I would have loved to keep him around, but we had a situation where we were losing him."

That other show would be David Makes Man, which will premiere on the Oprah Winfrey Network this August. The series is from Terrel Alvin McCraney with Winfrey and Michael B. Jordan serving as producers.

Rothenberg told Extra TV that they were upset about Bolger's departure. However, the show has lost cast members before, so they have to just roll with the punches and move on with more stories to tell on The 100 season 6.

Meanwhile, Shaw's romantic partner on The 100 season 6 has yet to learn of his death. Rothenberg said that Raven (played by Lindsey Morgan) would be mourning him for a while, but this doesn't mean that she will never be happy, despite what fans may think.

Raven's relationship with Shaw was just developing in The 100season 6. The two were not yet in love, but they had interesting chemistry together, and she truly cared for him.

In The 100 season 6 episode 2, Raven will lead the charge in the Mothership. She will also make an unlikely ally in this episode airing on May 7.

Meanwhile, the first episode back also almost took the life of Kane (played by Henry Ian Cusick) after his encounter with Octavia (played by Marie Avgeropoulos). The showrunner confirmed that Abby (played by Paige Turco) was able to save him and put him back into the cryo in time, so Kane will still be back in succeeding episodes of The 100 season 6.
