Young Sheldon season 3 will be carrying the torch for The Big Bang Theory after the latter series aired its final episode and bowed out of television this May. The spinoff series will still be back for a third and fourth season since CBS confirmed the renewal of Young Sheldon last February.

According to TV LineYoung Sheldon is guaranteed to remain on the air until 2021. With 11 million viewers every week, the comedy series is actually the third most popular show on CBS after the now-ended The Big Bang Theory and the long-running drama NCIS

Young Sheldon season 3 will likely start its run sometime in the third week of September, just like its first and second season. It will also likely keep its primetime Thursday slot to fill the void left by The Big Bang Theory

In fact, CBS has already released its 2019 fall TV schedule during the upfronts early this May. Young Sheldon season 3 will still be on its 8:00 p.m. Thursday schedule to anchor a new series titled The Unicorn, which will come on at 8:30 p.m.

"Our new lineup features both classic CBS shows and genres that viewers love, as well as some new series that push the boundaries of what you might expect from us," CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said. "We are also saving some very strong series for the second part of the year as part of a strategy to roll out new and returning series throughout the season."

Meanwhile, Young Sheldon season 3 will likely feature an 11-year-old Sheldon Cooper (played by Iain Armitage) as he enters college. It has always been hinted in The Big Bang Theory that Sheldon was already a university student at this point. The previous seasons of Young Sheldon have also hinted this trajectory as tertiary schools have expressed their interest over the young genius and his advanced intellect.

The upcoming installment will also likely show problems in the marriage of Sheldon's parents, Mary (played by Zoe Perry) and George Sr. (played by Lance Barber). In the mother series, Sheldon has told his friends that his dad had an affair while he was in college that caused a big problem in the family.

There have been no new cast announcements for Young Sheldon season 3 so far. More details will expectedly come to light when the cast and crew return to production this summer.
