Renee Zellweger's comeback is in full swing with the release of the anthology drama series What/If. Although Netflix has not yet confirmed its second season renewal, the actress said she is willing to return if there's a good role for her.
Speaking with Refinery 29, Zellweger expressed that she'd love to do What/If season 2 with creator Mike Kelley again. In the debut season, the Oscar-winning actress played the high profile and powerful businesswoman Anne Montgomery who made an indecent proposal to a young couple.
"I guess it depends on what's in Mike's head for another round," Zellweger said on the possibility of being part of What/If season 2. It is expected that the show will have a new story and new characters for the next installment since it's an anthology much like American Horror Story, Black Mirror, Fargo and True Detective.
Netflix dropped all 10 episodes of What/If season 1 last Friday, May 24. Expectedly, the streaming platform should announce the show's fate at least a month after its release.
If Netflix does confirm What/If season 2, the new episodes won't likely be on the streaming platform until the summer of 2020. According to Screen Rant, it took the first season nine months to be completed.
Reviews cite What/If as trash television and the "best worst show" on Netflix. It has an absurd soap opera storyline, which can be quite appealing and intriguing to viewers looking for a guilty pleasure.
Zellweger's character manipulates a struggling young married couple to fulfill her secret desires in What/If. However, the story has shocking twists and turns that viewers find either absolutely riveting and unbelievable.
Kelley told TV Line that he wanted Zellweger's character to be the female version of Darth Vader. In the finale episode of What/If season 1, Lisa (played by Jane Levy) discovered that the villainous Anne, who paid them to have sex with her husband Sean (played by Blake Jenner), is her mother. The writer also said that the twist in this storyline was what pulled Zellweger to finally do a TV show.
What/If season 1 also stars Dave Annable, Keith Powers, Samantha Marie Ware, Juan Castano, and Saamer Usmani. The show is still streaming on Netflix.
