Many fans are still wondering if BBC would consider having Sherlock Season 5. Cancellation rumors continue to hound the popular British crime drama television series since the network has not yet confirmed its renewal. Despite this, avid followers of the show are still hopeful to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles as Detective Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, respectively.
Series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have, already, expressed their interest in doing Sherlock Season 5 in the future. Both Steven and Mark have even stated that they are very much convinced that the series would be renewed for another run. However, BBC has not commented on their claims up to this writing.
Despite their eagerness to do Sherlock Season 5, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss said they could not do it at the moment. The duo revealed that they are, currently, busy doing other projects such as the Dracula series. This, according to reports, might be one of the many possible causes why BBC has not yet dropped any hint on the yet-to-be-confirmed fifth installment.
Another reason why fans think that Sherlock Season 5 is very much likely to happen is that Benedict Cumberbatch is willing to reprise his role. In fact, the 42-year-old English actor teased that he will never give up the character. "Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock - we just say the same thing all the time, and it gets quoted different ways," he explained in an interview with Radio Times.
Martin Freeman is, also, expected to return should Sherlock Season 5 push through. This is despite his previous statement saying that doing the series is not fun anymore because of fans' high expectations from them. If he decides to quit portraying the character of Doctor John Watson, it is possible that another actor will replace him to fill the gap.
Before reports about Sherlock Season 5 renewal sparked, former series regular Amanda Abbington, who played Mary Watson, called out the series for pandering to the series' entitled fans who believe that Sherlock and John are gays. "I don't think they were very happy with the last series. I think it got very complicated," the 45-year-old English actress stated. "I love [co-creator] Steven Moffat, but I think they started to pander to the fans, involving a lot of the fandom stuff. I thought, 'You should just stick to the stories, because they're much more interesting,'" she added.
