Veronica Mars is coming back from cancellation purgatory with a limited season run on Friday, July 26, on Hulu. Set for an eight-episode revival, the new season is essentially the fourth season but will it open the doors for a season 5 return?
Regarded as a miniseries, the Veronica Mars Hulu revival will showcase the titular character, played by Kristen Bell, as an adult private investigator. It comes after the events of the Veronica Mars movie that aired in 2014, where the character decided to stay put in her hometown of Neptune.
Creator Rob Thomas explained to the press during the ATX TV Festival that he was inspired to revive Veronica Mars into a miniseries, after more than 10 years of cancellation, because of a bomb scare that happened in his hometown in real life. Thus, in this limited season of Veronica Mars, the character will be investigating a series of attacks that have affected the social and economic life of the beach town.
Thomas, however, also said that he's not yet thinking beyond the Veronica Mars revival on Hulu. He doesn't want to get too comfortable and assume that the returning series would become a hit on the streaming platform, enough for Hulu to order more seasons.
All episodes of the Veronica Mars Hulu revival will be out at once so that fans can binge the new season. The first three seasons, on the other hand, will be accessible on the streaming platform beginning July 1, per TV Line.
Familiar faces to fans of the old series are returning to the Veronica MarsHulu revival, such as Enrico Calontoni as Veronica's dad Keith, Jason Dohring as her boyfriend Logan, and Percy Daggs III as her buddy Wallace. Max Greenfield will also appear in a few episodes as Deputy Leo, as will Ken Marino (as Vinnie Van Lowe) and Daran Norris (as Cliff McCormack).
However, Chris Lowell (as Piz) will not be in this miniseries, but his name will be heard a lot on the show. Ryan Hansen (as Dick Casablancas) will also be back to bring the comic relief, as he is the king of Neptune's famous spring break beaches.
The Veronica Mars revival on Hulu will have a different tone from the previous seasons since the character is now a full-fledged grown-up. And because the show is on a streaming platform, viewers can expect more adult language. Thomas, however, said that the revival will still be generally family-friendly since Hulu would like for the 14-year-old viewers to subscribe to the platform and watch the old seasons, along with the new.
The Veronica Mars Hulu revival will drop all eight episodes on Friday, July 26, at midnight.
