There was a time when people got excited over Doctor Who star Matt Smith being cast in Star Wars Episode 9. However, things have changed since the news broke in late 2018. There are speculations that Smith is no longer going to appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Nevertheless, some believe that Charlie Says actor will still play a mysterious new role in the highly anticipated sequel.

It was previously reported that Matt Smith's name had been removed from the Star Wars Episode 9 cast list. In addition to that, the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies star have stated that "as far as [he] can tell," he "definitely" is not in The Rise of Skywalker. But is it possible that Smith isn't exactly truthful about his connection to the upcoming film? There is still a possibility that he will show up in the movie although fans will not realize that it is him.

A new report suggests that although Matt Smith will be in The Rise of Skywalker, people will not immediately recognize him. The Terminator Genisys star could be wearing a mask and playing one of the Knights of Ren. Another possibility purports that Smith might play a Stormtrooper in Episode 9 just like James Bond actor Daniel Craig in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Venom star Tom Hardy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Of course, it is still possible that Matt Smith's scene has been cut from the film, just like what happened to Tom Hardy's appearance in The Last Jedi. This might be the reason why Smith's name was deleted from the Star Wars 9 cast list.

There are several other ways why Matt Smith's name was connected to The Rise of Skywalker in the first place. Smith may have been in negotiations to join the film, but a deal was never made. On the other hand, some fans firmly believe that Smith is playing a truly important role that needs to be kept a secret until its premiere.

For now, it is still unclear what happened to Matt Smith's casting in Star Wars Episode 9. Perhaps the truth can finally be revealed this December.

Will Matt Smith surprise the world by being in Episode 9? Was it just a rumor in the first place? Find out when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finally premieres on December 20.
