Murtagh (played by Duncan Lacroix) might be in big trouble in Outlander season 5. Speculations, however, seem to suggest that he will get help from an unsurprising ally as Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) could help him escape capture in the upcoming installment.
According to Daily Express, some fans believe that Jamie will be hatching his plans with Murtagh in secret given their situation. At the end of Outlander season 4, Jamie received orders from the North Carolina Governor to go after the rebels and take them to justice.
Unfortunately, Murtagh is one of those people leading the revolution in Outlander season 5, thus putting Jamie in a difficult spot. If he doesn't comply with his duties, he and his family could be at risk just as they have started building a life on Fraser's Ridge.
But Murtagh is a favorite on the show, which is why his character has not yet been killed off at this point. In Diana Gabaldon's books, which is the main source of the show's stories, Murtagh's character did not make it out alive.
Outlander season 5 will also reportedly center around themes about family. And more than blood relations, Jamie and Murtagh share a tight friendship that has weathered through a lot of challenges in the past seasons. This has fans convinced that Jamie will favor his godfather and friend over his duties to the governor.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts also hinted in an interview with Parade that Jamie's difficult position would cause some problems between him and Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe). The Fraser family will once again attract trouble despite trying to get away from this over and over again.
"Let's just say Jamie is clearly between a rock and a hard place, the rock being his signed oath to the Crown, to Governor Tryon, for the land that they live on, and his loyalty and his love for Murtagh," Roberts relayed. "So, that is going to cause the Frasers some trouble as we go forward in season five and we'll see how they get out of it or if they get out of it."
On a lighter note, filming Outlander season 5 in Scotland has had some unexpected and interesting developments. Heughan recently shared a funny anecdote that he had a gross encounter with birds that pooped on him, per Metro. Although his TV wife told him that this was a lucky sign, the actor did not feel quite positive about having bird feces on his head.
Outlander season 5 is expected to premiere on Starz in late fall 2019.
