Sherlock Season 5 remains as one of the most highly anticipated sequels even if BBC has not confirmed the series' fifth installment as of yet. Avid followers of the British crime drama series are positive that Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and the other cast members would be back for another run. Now, recent reports suggested that the much-awaited new season might arrive sometime in 2020.

Many viewers were not satisfied with how the show's fourth season ended in 2017, which is one of the many reasons why they want Sherlock Season 5 to come into a reality. "The Final Problem" episode featured the arrival of Eurus (Sian Brooke), who is the long-lost sister of Sherlock Holmes. It was revealed that she has been playing the emotions of Benedict Cumberbatch's character for her amusement.

In one scene, Sherlock talked with the girl on the plane again after waking up in a dark cell - which he later learned was fake. The main character is not aware that it was Eurus voice he hears again as visions of his old dog Redbeard haunted him. In the end, cops arrested Eurus, and Sherlock vowed to help his sister resolve her issues. This, according to predictions, could be a potential focus on the yet-to-be-confirmed Sherlock Season 5.

Though there were claims saying that having another installment could be impossible for the time being. Benedict Cumberbatch noted that none of the cast and crew had closed the door on the well-loved series. The 42-year-old English actor even expressed his interest in portraying the famous detective character once more.

Even series creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, previously, hinted that BBC is very much likely to order doing Sherlock Season 5 in the future. However, the pair made it clear that they could not handle the fifth installment yet for they have other commitments to attend to that includes the making of the Dracula series. Besides Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman -- who is now working on The Time Traveler's Wife, Una Stubbs and Louise Brealey have, previously, shown interest in reprising their roles for another season.

While others suggest that Sherlock Season 5 might happen in 2020, a few also claimed that it might not be possible to arrive at that year. It was, previously, revealed that Doctor Strange 2, which would star Benedict Cumberbatch, would begin filming in Spring 2020. The upcoming movie is expected to premiere on May 7, 2021.

In other words, 2020 would be a busy year for Benedict Cumberbatch, which leaves limited time for him to work on another Sherlock installment. Though these rumors and predictions could be true, it is important to note that BBC has yet to release an official announcement about the highly anticipated new season of the popular British crime drama series.
