Space Jam 2 with Lebron James is slowly taking shape. Warner Bros must be pleased with the way the casting has turned out as production has signed on an MCU star and a Star Trek actress.
Don Cheadle, who played James Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers and Iron Man movies is bringing his star power to the basketball superstar for Space Jam 2. His role, however, has been kept under wraps.
Sonequa Martin-Green, the lead actress of Star Trek: Discovery and of The Walking Dead fame, is also joining Space Jam 2. She has been cast to play the wife of Lebron, Savannah James, who is a businesswoman and a philanthropist, per Deadline.
Voice actor Eric Bauza is going to lend his voice to play Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in Space Jam 2. The rest of the cartoon voices haven't been named, but James is getting much support from key basketball stars like Chiney Ogwumike, Klay Thompson, Nneka Ogwumike, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, and Diana Taurasi. These players will be depicting fictional versions of their NBA and WNBA profiles, according to Cinema Blend.
Details to the storyline of Space Jam 2 remains a big secret. Fans of the original movie will recall that the plot centered on a retired Jordan who teamed up with the Tune Squad (Looney Tunes) to defeat a group of aliens that have possessed basketball stars. The sequel is supposed to follow the same theme and idea.
A column on Slate implied that James should play one of the Monstars, which was the team of villains in the original 1996 film. As a twist to the sequel, the Monstars could be the good guys from the beginning of the film.
Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler is one of the producers of Space Jam2. Justin Lin was supposed to direct the film, but it's now on the hands of Terence Nance.
Warner Bros has been developing Space Jam 2 with James under his studio SpringHill Entertainment since 2014. Filming will start in 2019 after the closing of the current NBA season thus there are still no trailers until the actual scenes are shot.
The movie will be filmed mostly in Los Angeles and California given that James and Warner Bros secured a $21.8 million tax credit to shoot in the state. Space Jam 2 has a target release date of July 16, 2021.
