K-pop is a huge industry, and its popularity has been growing nonstop. While the genre originally started in South Korea, it slowly expanded around Asia. Now, the whole world is aware of K-pop, and they can’t get enough of it.
K-pop idols trend not only in the real-world but mostly on social media. This is where they and their management share updates regarding their tours, new albums, promotions, endorsements, appearances, and more.
So when a K-pop idol trended on Twitter, it’s nothing new. However, what made G-Dragon and T.O.P different from other idols is the fact that they have been inactive in the entertainment world for a long time. They trended on multiple social media platforms.
T.O.P just completed his mandatory military service and was discharged just almost two weeks ago after being away from the limelight for two and a half years. G-Dragon and two more members of the legendary group BIGBANG Taeyang and Daesung are currently serving their compulsory duties.
Despite that, the BIGBANG boys still managed to trend on Twitter and China's Weibo, which is similar to the former platform. This incident is so rare that many believed that G-Dragon and T.O.P trending on social media mean that people are still talking about BIGBANG despite their silence in the K-pop world.
T.O.P started trending when he posted a much-awaited selfie after discharge. Although this is not his first entry after completing his service, this is the first one where he took the picture himself.
His real name “Choi Seunghyun” and the Korean pronunciation and spelling for T.O.P, “Tabi,” were trending on Twitter in various countries. The hashtag #TOP also trended on Weibo, with news about his discharge being read 270 million times.
As for G-Dragon, he quickly trended when his Art Exhibition and New Edition of his album “UNTITLED 2017” were announced. The news about the update was read 290 million times on Weibo.
Meanwhile, G-dragon will be discharged on October 26, 2019, and followed by Taeyang and Daesung on November 11. BIGBANG was a five-member group, but youngest member Seungri decided to retire after he was involved in a lot of controversies. He was supposed to enlist this year but had to postpone to face the charges.
Fans have been waiting for the five members to finish their military service so that they could go back to the K-pop world as a group again, but the YG Entertainment band is going to resume as a four-member group.
