A well-known tipster recently tweeted out some interesting news about smartphones: in 2020, our devices will have 108-megapixel cameras and will utilize 10x optical zoom.

According to Ice Universe, several flagship smartphones will come with these amazingly helpful features. Imaging a phone camera that can produce that high of a quality image and the ability to zoom up to 10x without losing quality - that's remarkable.

OPPO and Huawei this year utilized periscope camera systems, allowing users to zoom in quite a bit and get amazing results. Will next year's phones achieve even better results?

Some people argue that a phone with a 48-megapixel camera isn't necessary and a bit too much. But they already exist, thanks to pixel binning. A 108-megapixel camera on a smartphone is a bit overkill, but who wouldn't get excited of what this technology can achieve? You can already capture amazing photos in a 48-MP camera, imagine the possibilities of a 108-megapixel cam.

We're placing our bets on Chinese OEMs to deliver the world's first 108-megapixel camera phones because why not? Chinese companies have managed to outstand us in recent years, particularly when it comes to increasing pixel counts.

We should probably mention that different OEMs apply different kinds of methods to deliver smartphone photography tech. For example, Google has managed to maintain its single 12.2-megapixel sensor for quite a while now, and it's worked for them. The software that the company uses does most of the hard work, and the Pixel 3 line is touted to have one of the best cameras around. This year, the search giant is moving to a dual-camera setup. What it's going to do next year, we're yet to find out.

Samsung is hard at work upgrading its camera systems as well, and it's likely that the Galaxy Note 10 will have the same sensor as the Galaxy S10. The latter model, however, will see an improvement in terms of a three-stage variable aperture along with other enhancements. The same holds true for the Galaxy S11.

With this news, we're definitely looking forward to 2020; it will be an interesting year for smartphones it would seem. We're looking forward to smartphone technology to be way better than it already is now, thanks to Ice Universe's tweet. If it turns out to be true, that's another credit for the tipster but a benefit to us all. Although, this might put pressure on other companies who don't have these enhancements on their board yet.
