Back in 2018, Taylor Swift invited Charli XCX to open for her on Reputation Tour. Along with Camilla Cabello, the artists expressed on social media their excitement and gratefulness about the invitation. But it seems that times have changed, and so are Charli XCX's thoughts about the matter.
In an interview with Pitchfork that has been published on August 6, the Boom Clap singer revealed her "real" experience on the said tour. And according to Charli XCX, it felt as if she was waving to "5-year-olds" upon entering the stage.
Quite obviously, fans of Taylor Swift did not like what she had to say about them. Her comments backfired, and the fans went mad.
Just a few hours after the interview's publication, Buzzfeed has uncovered what the fans have to say about Charli XCX. And based on the reception, it seemingly appears that they immediately went after the singer and told her how "ungrateful" she is for Taylor Swift.
A few individuals even joked about the singer's future career after spilling her thought about Taylor's fans. And without a doubt, the comments that she made created a huge commotion among the fandom.
While the comments may seem too "harsh" and "offensive" as per E!, Charli XCX shortly took it to Twitter to explain herself, and as per the statement that she posted, her thoughts about the fans being "5-year-olds" are taken out of context. As it happens, she is truly thankful for the opportunity that she was given on tour.
She conceded that the Reputation Tour was one of the biggest tours in history. And she also explained how Taylor Swift is one of the biggest artists of her generation. So, being invited to open for her is a huge deal for her.
But to explain her comments about the fans, Charli XCX stated that the tour was filled with people of all ages. And this is something new to her as she is used to performing in front of a certain age group. Hence, it made her "approach" the performances with a whole new different "energy" and vibe.
In the end, she explained that she wants nothing but "love" among all the artists and fans. She also confirmed that her statements do not contain any "shade," just love.
Although the singer reiterated throughout the statement that she is grateful for Taylor's invitation, Charli XCX will no longer open other artists in the future. She concluded that she finally needs to "own" her thing once and for all.
