Avengers: Endgame is officially the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Avatar's phenomenal $2.78 billion record. However, it looks like the James Cameron franchise is already set to take back the record in just two years. Cliff Curtis, who will appear in Avatar 2, has stated that the sequel will defeat the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. In addition to that, the former Fear The Walking Dead star revealed how Cameron's new movie would be bigger than Endgame.
Avatar was certainly a groundbreaking film during its time. Although James Cameron conceived the idea for the movie while he was working on Titanic, it would be more than a decade later that the film would be released. According to the filmmaker, he chose to delay the movie since the technology needed for production was not yet available in 1997. Nevertheless, it was certainly worth the wait as Avatar went on to become the first film to gross over $2 billion.
But will Avatar 2 be able to replicate the feat? Cliff Curtis believes it can. The star of The Last Airbender has been cast as a new Na'vi character named Tonowari, and he strongly believes that the sequel will manage to defeat Avengers: Endgame in the box office. However, he did point out that James Cameron gracefully accepted defeat to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cliff Curtis was recently promoting his new film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw when he opened up about his upcoming project. Interestingly, Curtis commented on how James Cameron and Avatar producer Jon Landau were "very classy men" for sending an email that addressed "the accomplishments of Marvel" with Avengers: Endgame. On the other hand, he firmly believes that Avatar 2 will take back the first film's record.
"Mind you, my perspective is -- because I'm Avatar family -- they [Marvel] came into that with 20 movies. And I think, you know, I can't wait to see what happens," Cliff Curtis said. He also implied that Avengers: Endgame's success only came due to the buildup from Marvel's previous films spanning 20 years while Avatar achieved the $2 billion mark on its first movie alone.
"I can't wait to see what happens with two, three, four, and five. What's going to happen? I'm so excited," he said.
Will Avatar 2 manage to defeat Avengers: Endgame? The world will find out when the sequel finally premieres on December 17, 2021.
