Dark season 3 is returning on Netflix. The German mystery and drama series was renewed in June for its third and final season, and its showrunners promise that it will answer all of the questions the viewers have wanted to know since Day 1.

Co-creators and showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about what to expect in Dark season 3. They said that the show was always intended to be a three-season release; hence, the final renewal was not a surprise.

Friese and Bo Odar have also confirmed that Dark season 3 is currently filming and will complete principal photography in December. There will be eight episodes to the final season on Netflix, which are expected to drop in June 2020.

"We will offer answers to the questions that our viewers have been asking and help untangle the story through time," the showrunners stated. "It will be hard for us to walk away from those characters we have really grown fond of, but the beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning."

Speculated to return for Dark season 3 are the main actors: Louis Hofmann (as Jonas Kahnwald), Dietrich Hollinderbäumer (as Adam), Andreas Pietschmann (as The Stranger/Future Noah), Daan Lennard Liebrenz (as Mikkel Nielsen), Lisa Vicari (as Martha Nielsen), Jördis Triebel (as Katharina Nielsen), Moritz Jahn (as Magnus Nielsen), Oliver Masucci (as Ulrich Nielsen), Paul Lux as Bartosz Tiedemann, and Gina Stiebitz (as Franziska Doppler). But the show has some new additions as well in actors Hans Diehl, Barbara Nusse, Nina Kronjager, Jakob Diehl, Sammy Scheuritzel and Axel Werner. Their roles have not been disclosed to the press.

The showrunners won't confirm whether Dark season 3 will have a positive ending, especially after some of the characters expressed in the second season that they would like to put an end to their cycle of time traveling.

"They think they know how this works but they don't. They are still human," Friese said in the interview with Vulture. "We keep it ambivalent. And it can go both ways. But I won't tell you whether there's hope or a silver lining in the end."

Dark is a story that takes place in a small rural industrial town in Germany where deaths among the locals are frequent. The show centers on four families -- Neilsens, Dopplers, Kahnwalds, and Tiedemanns -- whose children have gone missing to an alarming rate.

As the locals try to investigate the mystery, the characters also uncover truths about how their lives are connected and directed by time travel. Dark season 2, which came out in June 2019 on Netflix, ended with the threat of an apocalypse.
