A lot of fans are wondering if BBC is still interested in renewing popular British crime drama television series, which is based on the Sherlock Holmes detective stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Rumors are rife that the network could consider ordering another installment due to the series' massive followings and the insistent demand of its viewers. But, is Sherlock Season 5 really happening?
The fourth season of the famous show aired its final episode in 2017. There are reports saying that the latest episode of the British series could serve as its official ending, making Sherlock Season 5 a distant possibility. Despite this, series co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat remained positive that the show could come back to small screens for another run.
The pair, previously, revealed that they started working on the plotline of Sherlock Season 5 while the fourth season was airing. Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat even said that they are willing to return to the creator seats should BBC order another installment. However, Mark and Steven said they are, currently, focusing on the Dracula series, which is why it is impossible for them to work on the crime drama show at the moment.
Even series lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman expressed their interest to make a return in Sherlock Season 5. However, just like Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, the duo, also, have to work on their present projects. Benedict is said to be working for his upcoming comeback movie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is set to premiere in 2021. Martin, for his part, had been very busy filming two projects lately, namely: Ode to Joy and The Operative.
Aside from Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Andrew Scott is very much willing to reprise his role if plans for a fifth season would be materialized. The actor, however, admitted that he is clueless about the fate of the show. Despite this, he said his door was never fully closed for Sherlock Season 5.
"I think everybody's sort of doing their own separate thing just at the moment. I know Stephen and Mark have done a version of Dracula which I'm looking forward to seeing," Andrew Scott, who played the role of Moriarty, told Digital Spy about Sherlock Season 5 in an interview. "For me, the door is never fully closed. It's closed at the moment, but that doesn't mean it can't be opened at some point in the future. But it's definitely not something that's on the agenda in the foreseeable future," he added.
