The anticipation is high for the upcoming Fox's new crime drama, Prodigal Son. The series has dropped a new teaser that features a chilling conversation between NYPD profiler Malcolm Bright and his father, Dr. Martin Whitly.
In a new sneak peek, Malcolm (Tom Payne) visits his father in prison and tells him that he applied to Quantico to join the FBI. Martin reminds his son that the agency may not trust him since his father is a serial killer. But instead of listening to his father, Malcolm tells him that it will be his last time to visit him.
As Martin tells his son that he will not let him go and reminds him that they are the same, Malcolm wakes up from a bad dream while his hands are tied on his bed in a metal chain and biting a mouthguard. Having his father's DNA, Malcolm seems to be afraid that he might sleepwalk and inflict harm to others. Watch the new teaser below.
Prodigal Son follows the life of a criminal psychologist, Malcolm Bright, who knows how a killer mind works because of his father, Dr. Martin Whitly, who is not only a well-known cardiothoracic surgeon with high-profile patients but also the infamous serial killer known as "The Surgeon." When he was young, he witnessed his father's arrest for murdering at least 23 people.
In the present day, Malcolm will use his skills as a psychologist to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers while he deals with his not-so-normal family. Aside from having a murderer father, he also has a manipulative mother, Jessica (Bellamy Young) and an annoying sister, Ainsley (Halston Sage).
Although in the latest trailer Malcolm tells Martin about his FBI plans, the first official trailer of the series that was released in May revealed otherwise. Viewers have already known that Malcolm will not work with the FBI for a long time. He will be fired and will end up working with Gil Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips) instead.
Gill is a tough and experienced NYPD detective who asks Bright to join his team despite knowing his father's history. Malcolm and Gill's first case is finding a copycat killer. Prodigal Son premieres on September 23 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Meanwhile, executive producers Chris Fedak, Sam Sklaver, and Sarah Schechter have talked about how they come up with the story of a murderer father and profiler son story. During the Prodigal Son panel at the recent TCA press tour, the EPs said it all started when they are talking about how the parents affect the behavior of their children.
"Chris and I were really just playing around with characters and what makes them interesting on TV. We were wondering about parents and how they can affect the children. What if your father was a serial killer - but also a really good dad?" And so was born 'Prodigal Son,'" Sklaver said (via Deadline).
