The autumn season has begun; thus, fans are about to see the television adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic, The War of the Worlds. BBC has dropped the show's official trailer, giving a glimpse of what to come.
The mini-series will only have three episodes, led by Rafe Spall as George, Eleanor Tomlinson as Amy, Rupert Graves as Frederick, and Robert Carlyle as Ogilvy. Set the Edwardian England, in the southern English county of Surrey, mankind will be at risk after a meteor carrying Martians land in the British countryside.
At the time, George is only starting a new life with Amy after he escapes his failing marriage. The show will also feature his brother, Frederick, and the astronomer Ogilvy, per Variety.
Originally, The War of the Worlds is an 1897 novel by Wells, who was known as the father of science fiction due to the genre of his works. It is one of the earliest books that tell the story of the conflict between humans and aliens. Compared to Steven Spielberg's take of the novel, adapting it to the 2005 movie led by Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, the mini-series will be faithful to the tale's original period and setting.
"HG Wells' seminal novel has been adapted for the screen many times, but it's always had a contemporary (and American) setting," director Craig Viveiros said, via RadioTimes. "This is the first version to be set in London and [its environs] during the Edwardian period."
However, BBC added new characters, George and Amy, in its take of The War of the Worlds. The show writer Peter Harness added the version of Wells' story that he wanted to make is the one that would stick to its original tone and the spirit of the book. However, he also wanted it to be contemporary, surprising, and carrying a lot of shocks that combine the theme of sci-fi, period drama, and horror.
The series will be aired on the flagship channel BBC One. ITV Studios has sold the show to major European countries and more than 50 African territories. The release comes a little late after the production takes place in mid-2018. Originally, it was set to be out on the festive season last year.
As the show is going to be filled with several special effects, it needs a lot of time to polish every scene. Finally, the work is now completed as BBC One has announced The War of the Lords will be out in autumn this year and not during the Christmas season that opposed everyone's expectations.
