It has been two years since Michael Scofield's (Wentworth Miller) story ended, but fans are still clamoring for Prison Break Season 6. Although Fox confirmed a new season is in its early developments, there are no details yet if it is already in the works. So, will the show still see the light of the day?
Fox entertainment boss Michael Torn announced, in January 2018, that "a new iteration" of Prison Break is currently in development. However, more than a year has passed; there is no update about the series.
Miller is also optimistic there will be Prison Break Season 6. According to Digital Spy, the 47-year-old star believed there is always a room for more for the show. As long it has a story worth to tell that will be justified, cool, and edgy, they will continue working on the series.
As Michael and Sara's (Sarah Wayne Callies) son, Mike Jr. (Christian Michael Cooper), is now part of the story, Miller knew they could tell more stories now there are multiple generations in the show. Dominic Purcell, who plays Lincoln Burrows, echoed the same sentiment and assured he is willing to do the series for years, especially the sixth season.
However, series creator Paul Scheuring backtracked and said that despite the fans and actors' desire for the show to return, Season 5 already featured a "closed-ended story." "Part of the problem with the original show was that we had to keep flapping our wings and keep extending," he told Digital Spy. "I feel like the fans suffered for that because at some point, you run out of the narrative and you start making up stuff that's lesser quality."
Scheuring admitted he couldn't tell another story about Michael, Lincoln, and the rest of the gang that would satisfy the fans. Miller also took a reverse direction and told Entertainment Weekly he didn't want to work on Prison Break Season 6 just because they want to go on.
Just like Scheuring, Miller has a reasonably high standard for what the show's story needs to be. The Flash actor knows it's hard to come up with a new storyline that will fit in the series' concept; thus, it is not easy to feature a breaking out that would never look like a repeat of the same old story. As the fifth season has a strong narrative for a nine-episode run, they have to create an equally strong or even stronger plotline to do a new installment.
Although they would never say never, Miller assured they would not work on a new season just to have something new to release. They know they have to make it great. For now, there is no plan for Prison Break Season 6. But, if the creator, stars, producers, or even writers come up with a good concept, it will surely be in the works.
