Amazon Prime has renewed Absentia for another season, and it will also have a brand new showrunner. A couple of new characters will also debut in Absentia Season 3.

Lead actress Stana Katic earlier teased about the renewal of the series. Last month, she posted a photo of her along with the series' writers and inserted the hashtag #ABSENTIASeason3 on her caption.

Season 3 will pick up three months after the events of Season 2. Emily Byrne (Katic) is nearing the end of her suspension from the FBI and working hard to be the best mother to her son, Flynn (Patrick McAuley).

However, things will change when one of the criminal cases of her ex-husband, Nick (Patrick Heusinger), hits too close to home and threatens her family. The dangerous journey that follows will take Emily far from Boston, and it will test her like never before. Apparently, this will also force her to trust and love again.

Filming for the third season is currently underway in Bulgaria. This is probably where Emily's dangerous mission brought her.

Amazon Prime has yet to reveal a release date for Absentia Season 3, but it is expected to be sometime in 2020. Katic has recently, confirmed that they have started filming for the third season of the thriller drama series.

Meanwhile, Orphan Black producer Will Pascoe has replaced Samantha Corbin-Miller as showrunner of the series. Meanwhile, Kingsman: The Secret Service actor Geoff Bell will join the cast of Absentia Season 3  along with Pokémon: Detective Pikachu actress Josette Simon.

Bell will play the role of Colin Dawkins, a "fixer" for an international criminal organization. Simon, on the other hand, will portray Rowena Kincade, a former instructor at Quantico and career intelligence agent with MI5 and MI6. She kept tabs on Emily (Stana Katic) after she saw something on her when she was in Quantico. It is unclear if Rowena will become Emily's ally or foe.

Absentia follows the story of FBI agent Emily Byrne who vanishes without a trace while hunting down a notorious serial killer in Boston. She is declared dead in absentia.

Six years later, she is found clinging for her life in a cabin in the woods. Emily has no memory of the years that she was missing. Her husband has remarried and her son is being raised by his new wife. Soon after her reappearance, she finds herself implicated in a new series of murders.

In addition to Katic, Heusinger, and McAuley, other returning cast members are Neil Jackson (Emily's brother Jack), Matthew Le Nevez (FBI Special Agent Cal Isaac), Natasha Little (Special Agent Gunnarsen), and Paul Freeman (Emily's adopted father Warren).
